Bollywoodfilm as an entry to societal debate

I have been watching Bollywood films frequently for about five years, and while conducting fieldwork in Delhi, I saw all the latest releases, because my informants related to this media. My informants watch both Bollywood and American films, and during conversations Bollywood often came up as a topic. Referring to Anthropologist Jacobs-Huey’s concept, the native card, I call this competence the Bollywood card. Knowledge might be an entry to some fields, one entry point for me in my research was the Bollywood knowledge. The Bollywood card functioned as an icebreaker, as an entry point to societal debate, and serves as a common topic of discussion.

In India, Bollywood film is a large part of the entertainment sector. “Every day about 15 million people throng the 13,000 movie halls in the country” (Varma 2004:154). Bollywoodfilms are frequently debated in the media, and the controversial films are often banned in certain states according to the local state government which has a major influence in the entertainment. New Bollywood films tend to challenge conventions by portraying unconventional relationships like extra-marital affairs, inter-caste relationships, divorce, pre-marital sex, as well as portraying people who challenge the heteronormative sexuality or climb the social ladder from poverty to wealth, in its own collective fantasy (Kakar 1996:25).

The film Dostana (Hindi = friendship), for example is challenging the heterosexual norm. Another film that premiered during my stay in Delhi was Rab Ban Na Di Jodi (Hindi=A match made in heaven), about a good girl who conforms to her father’s wishes to get married, when the father lies on his death bed. The fathers last wish is to know that his daughter is in good hands when he passes away, and she is united with a man of her father’s choice. The girl in the film challenges the conventional norm of a good wife with telling her husband that she will never love him, and then eventually falls in love outside of her marriage.

He is Bollywood’s ultimate heartthrob and reports of a break-up with actress Katrina Kaif have only added to Salman Khan’s appeal. The actor who was in town to promote his film ‘Dabangg’ was approached by a female fan to grant her the “lifelong wish” to touch him just once.

The 44-year-old actor caused a traffic jam in Connaught Place when he made an appearance at a theatre to promote his upcoming film accompanied by co-star Sonakshi Sinha and producer and brother Arbaaz Khan.

Some die-hard fans managed to get past the security into the press conference and Komal Sinha was among them.

Accompanied by her husband, she took to the mic during the press conference and requested the star for a chance to touch him.

The actor who was sporting his trademark tight T-shirt and jeans look, granted her wish but it lead to many others trying to get their hands on their idol and the actor’s security had to push them away.

“I am happy because he was really nice to me. He asked me my name and waved to my husband in the crowd. And he looks so much better in real life,” said Komal.

The actor who plays a corrupt cop, Chulbul Pandey in the film had to face a volley a questions about his relationship with Kaif.

The actor instead blamed the media for invading his privacy and creating a spectacle out of a personal matter.

“I was prodded again and again in the interview about Katrina. I finally asked her (the reporter), ‘What do you want me to say? Do you want me to say that I have broken up with her. So be it’ You need to see the entire interview before asking me questions,” said Salman.

The beautiful actress has been appointed as brand ambassador of Etihad airlines and the lanky lass has shot interesting advertisement to promote the luxurious international flight.
The commercial was choreographed by Farah Khan in which, Katrina will be seen dancing with fellow passengers to give the feel of Etihad airlines motto “It feels good to fly with the best”.

Till now, the Katrina Kaif doll was enclosed at a Barbie museum in the US. Now, the makers have decided to market the doll all over the world from this December. There is a plan of a global launch of the doll. But at this moment, neither the people related to this Barbie nor Katrina is allowed to open their mouth about it.
However, as per the information from a reliable source, on Wednesday, a representative of the company has reached Mumbai to discuss about it and has taken the face shots of Katrina for developing the Barbie model. These dolls would be given the exact look of the actress and will be offered in a box carrying her description.
A source has informed that Katrina was in strong support of marketing the dolls in India first. The actress wanted to expand her ‘Barbie’ image with the help of this doll. However, the dolls will not now have a worldwide launch by this year-end. Initially, the makers wanted the doll to be dressed in only western attire but on Katrina’s insistence they also included the Indian attires like sarees and salwar-kameezes.
The source informed that the selection of clothes and accessories for the doll is being done by Katrina personally.

Rajnikanth-Aishwarya Rai starrer costliest film in India

Tamil mega star Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer bilingual film Endhiran is being touted as the costliest film of India with a budget of Rs 150 crore.

The film, which will be released this September inTamil and Hindi (Robot), has been in the making for over two years and has been shot in exotic locations like Vienna in Austria, Machu Picchu in Peru, US and Brazil.

Rajinikanth, 60, loved by audiences for his flamboyant style onscreen, plays a double role of a scientist and robot in the film.

The movie boasts of an impressive foreign crew that has costume designer E Vogt and stunt coordinator Yuen Woo Ping.

According to industry sources, the budget of the film is double of the action entertainer 'Blue', which had a budget of Rs 75 crore.

The 40 per cent of the cost has been spent on the special effects in the science-fiction film, which has been directed by S Shankar and produced by Sun TV owner Kalanithi Maran.

Ali Zafar roped in for next YRF production

After his impressive debut in Tere Bin Laden the Pakistani sensation Ali Zafar is suddenly hot and happening in Bollywood. The actor has caught the fancy of none other than Aditya Chopra who has signed him for one of YRF's forthcoming projects.

The film is a romantic comedy staring Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif and will be directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. The film goes on floors in mid-September. Confirming this news, YRF's spokesperson says, "Yes...Ali Zafar has been confirmed for a leading part in the movie starring Imran and Katrina. We are also in the process of finalising a girl opposite him."

For seven days continuously, Katrina has been rehearsing her belly-dance steps and all the rigour of endless Shakira-like shimmying is taking its toll on the actress. Consequently, Katrina’s knee began to pain and she also had a severe cramp in her stomach that called for the rehearsals to be wrapped up early.

From what we hear, while rehearsing the belly dance, Katrina yelled out loud, sending Farah Khan and the dance team in panic. When Farah realized that Katrina’s body couldn’t take the rehearsals anymore, she called for an early pack-up and also gave a day’s holiday to the actress to rest.

Now, the song will begin shooting from August 21. The number will have Katrina doing some breathtaking belly-dance steps.

Kaif walked the ramp wearing a peach ruffled lehenga, a traditional ensemble with a small blouse and rich, flowing skirt, with a jewel-encrusted top created by fashion designer Neeta Lulla. The actress also sported chunky diamond jewellery that was based on the traditional seven-stone floral cluster design.
"I think Neeta Lulla is been in the industry for probably 25 years. She knows about her colours so I have a lot of trust for someone like her. I know what kind of look she wants to present. It doesn't come naturally to me, it's a thing like, what kind of bridal outfit do I want to wear. Probably, personally I would go for something really understated and really liked it," said Kaif.
The actress also unveiled a new bangle collection - the Divine Circles.
IIJW is India's first-ever Jewellery Week and would run till Thursday.
The extravaganza will showcase the collections of 30 designers, including Farah Khan Ali, Varun D Jani, Bina Goenka and Rhea Nasta. Well-known jewellery brands like Mirari, Gitanjali, Amrapali, Tanishq and Ganjam are also participating.
Buyers from Japan, Russia, Britain, China, Italy, Malaysia, Libya, Morocco, Iran, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan are also expected to attend the event.
